Hi I’m Jess 🙂 I’m the owner and founder of Pretty Casual 🙂 I started this brand in September 2017 where we had a small launch with family and close friends in my parent’s lounge. At the beginning of 2022 we moved into our first warehouse space 🙂 I studied an LLB and after the 4 years I decided I didn’t want to be a lawyer. I attempted law school which would have taken a year off of articles but dropped out after 3 weeks. I came up with a few ideas of what I was going to do with my life but the only one that stuck was starting a clothing brand. I wanted to create happy, colourful and comfortable clothing because that is what I like to wear.
One day I was walking in Cavendish and I decided to just get one t-shirt made in a way I had imagined the brand to be and then I’d take it from there. I bought a plain white t-shirt from Edgars and took it to a printing shop in the mall. The man at the shop stood there with me for quite a while as we printed a standard sunflower image and scattered it all over the t-shirt. I thought I’d wear it out one night and see if anyone said anything. A stranger walked past me and said ‘hey nice top’ and it was literally in that moment that I thought ‘if one person likes it other people will too!’ The brand was inspired by the 90s (pretty much clothing I grew up in) and beautiful mother nature. I couldn’t find what I wanted to wear in the shops so I thought I’d just make my own 🙂 Colourful clothing makes me smile so I wanted to create something that did that for other people too 🙂
At Pretty Casual, we’re proud to uphold the belief that ‘local is lekker’
Once I had decided to give this brand a shot I spent months looking for the right suppliers. I drove from fabric store to fabric store, met with CMT after CMT and had countless samples made. I knew from the start that I wanted everything to be made locally – pattern maker, fabric supplier, printing company, CMT, wash house – everything is done locally and I’m so grateful I’m able to do this and for the relationships I have with everyone involved 🙂 I knew nothing about anything to do with clothing production so everyday was trial and error, but it was a lot of fun 🙂 And now we are HERE! 🙂
